Hiya, I have just been looking in my diary and it is only 6 days away from the glorious 12th and the anniversary of THAT train snog.
So I was wondering, would anyone like to take part in a group DVD watch of the episode (which I will admit is one of my favourites) and have a chat on here afterwards? We still don't really have summer yet here in the UK, so I would love a chance to dust down my DVD's.
Yes Karina I know it's 1:7 Who should ever forget that very special epi with the Train Snog in it I would love to rewatch it this week. I shall see if I can create time for it. Great epi to give me Lie Die's Erm but it's about The Glorious Twelfth then that we have to talk and not about those kisses or HG
Excellent. I love that episode. I think it is probably my absolute fave out of all the series (well I do love the midsummer ball ep too).
It will be hard to wait until the 12th to discuss (and watch it). Dawn and Alastair are both soooooo cute in, it was from that ep that I started to really want Lexie and Archie to end up together, so no doubt we will talk loads about the train snog and HG after we have watched it.
When do you want to start the discussion? On Sunday or Monday? I probably watch it Sunday evening - Monday early morning in UK - won't be posting until Monday (UK time)! Not that it really matters I guess!!
I think the idea was to watch it at the weekend and then discuss it more or less as a group chat starting on Sunday/Monday depending where in the world we are - otherwise someone might make such a long message so as to leave little else for anyone else to say? See the original message at the beginning!
Sorry, I haven't been online for 2 days. It must have looked like I was observing total silence after suggesting the idea.
Sarnian's suggestion is a good one, I'll watch it on Sunday night(August 12th and the Sundays is the night MOTG was broadcast on in the UK too) and then the chat can commence on late Sunday/early Monday.
Anyone can start the discussons though, you don't have to wait for me - especially as we have different timezones to observe. The more the merrier. Should be great.
The actual time isn't important, so you can do it before or after Mountain - we will all be different - in fact I will probably one of the last due to the time difference - but I will try to put up some screen caps as suggested by someone!
LOL Paul Great Thanks for the lovely story of the Glorious Twelfth And enjoy this great day in Glenbogle Story
I think you can believe that I'm looking forward to the next installments with screencaps and certainly those of the Train Snog Thanks for those you posted yet ! And right on this day we can see our fav place in BBC Mountain my recorder is ready for it yet
I'm asking myself who was that Val Doo.... how was his name again ? We didn't get an answer on it.
Loved the moment Archie and Lexie fishing Lexie chatting 'Be quiet Lexie or I send you home ! ' 'Yes daddy ' " He with that funny cap and she in her raincoat
I'll leave it to another one now to go further There are so many funny moments. I only forgot one when Kilwillie was saying something about his 'whisky.......' Can someone add the rest of this sentence ?
I also remember the change in Archie at the beginning, when he started very happy with Katrina but when he came out from voting, Katrina asked him how he voted. He told her that he wasn't going to tell her which annoyed her!! "You didn't vote for me, did you?" and he didn't answer - much to her annoyance!
We then saw him go to the 'plane to join Lexie! He looked back and saw Katrina happily in the arms of her boyfriend, Alan, who had come to help her with the election!!
We next see him, unhappy, in the plane but, Lexie, obviously happy with him and shortly afterwards he seems to be pleased with her company!
The screen caps are great Paul. Brings back so many memories.
Sorry I did not turn up for the chat. We were so short staffed at work, I was run off my feet. I got home at 7.30, made a cup of tea, sat down, and woke up just after 3.oclock (with a cold cup of tea.) Oh well, maybe next time. ;D
No you are alright Caro, we haven't really got going yet, because of the time zones etc we agreed to chat more on the 13th, so you can still join in ;D. I am going to post my thoughts in the next 10 minutes or so.
I think I had better be honest up front and say that this is one of my most favourite episodes in all of the series (so I did have a sneaky ulterior motive for suggesting this group watch). Before I started watching it last night I was wondering why I do love it so much and still don’t think I have come up with a definitive answer, there are loads of reasons why.
One thing that was clear is that Michael Chaplin had really found his feet when writing this episode. He has already succeeded in introducing us to his characters in the previous episodes and allows himself as writer and themselves as actors/characters to have fun. The one-liners in this episode are fantastic and every character has them, here are a few of my favourites…
Golly - “one of the giants of Celtic culture…..Val Doonigan” Lexie (when talking about ruining Mr Slurpy’s Strawberry surprise) - “Well it wouldn’t be full of strawberries would it?” Mr Slurpy – “What’s this then D-Day for the Jocks?” Hector – “There are something’s up with which one shall not put!” Archie – “You’re talking 100% fish droppings” Molly – “It’s hardly rocket science is it? Walking up a hillside shouting obscenities at flocks of birds?” Justine – “…or whichever highland lassie you are tossing the caber with!” Archie – “it’s OK Lexie, I always have this effect in women in bed” Lastly my favourite from Mr Slurpy - “Nice place Archie, I painted me Mam’s lav that colour”
You know I could have carried on typing quotes for ages, there are so many to chose from.
Another thing I noticed that there were two themes that seemed really strong in this ep too. Firstly there was the changing from the old guard to the new world order, Hector to Archie running the estate, Killwillie to Katrina on the council, Golly to Duncan on the shoot (I loved the scenes between those two, like father and son, very moving).
Secondly, you obviously get to see Archie interact with all of his women, but when I watched it again last night, I noticed just how alone he seemed in that ep. He argues with Hector before he goes to London, argues with Katrina at the polling station (I know she is under stress, but I thought she was very harsh on him there), argued with Justine and Lennie at the restaurant, in fact it is only when he is with Lexie that he has someone to talk to and will listen (and we all know what happened there don’t we).
Lexie is great in this episode, beautifully written and acted, you feel as if she has dropped the hard housekeeper front and you are getting to know the real her; gentle, hardworking and caring (who else would feel sorry for Justine after an encounter like that eh?)
Molly is great too, you are really starting to see more to her too, I love how happy she is because she has finally followed her own convictions instead of her husbands prejudice…and can anybody tell me whether there is anyone else in the world who would look so beautiful and elegant in old wellies, a flared skirt and a quilted body warmer as Susan Hampshire?
However, it is the sleeper compartment that I really love the best!! I realised last night that for later MOTG standards, it is actually quite saucy. It starts with Lexie (fortified with tequila) saying “Don’t worry, I’ll go on top...bunk that is” both of them laugh at that one liner. Getting ready for bed after more red wine, “My Archie MacDonald Calvin Klein’s.” The cuddles in jim-jams are so tender, and as I said before, even tough she falls asleep on him, Lexie is the first person who sympathises with Archie and actually listens to him, it is no surprise they have that snog at Penrith, and let’s face it, it is a damn fine snog! In a bed, on a train! Wow! (I mean they only hugged when Archie left in S5). I agree with Lexie, Archie is a gentleman for not taking advantage.
I remember back in 2000 when I watched this ep for the first time, being so happy that Archie didn’t contradict a very hungover Lexie the next morning at Glenbogle station after she said “Maybe we’ll get another chance, when I’m not half pished!” In fact he gives her another kiss and walks smiling hand in hand from the station with her. Awww they are such a lovely couple, it was from that moment on that I was willing them to get to get together.
I think I will leave it there for the time being as I could type all day and I don’t want to hog the discussions. I do have a couple of questions though….Did anyone else think Justine and Lenny were more than just employer/employee and what do you think about Katrina kissing Alan?
