I hated Murdo, especially when he was mocking Molly about him having the pendant. I agree with you there maddie, i didn't like the way Katrina treated Archie. I mean, what else was he supposed to say to Fergal? 'Me and katrina, were more than just friends.' What's that gonna come out as?? Katrina angry with Archie for ruining the relationship, Archie wanting Katrina, Fergal..alone.
I felt when Lexie said to Duncan, 'I felt about this big, do you know how that feels like' she was being too close-minded; she did it to Duncan all the time...and she always teased him, and Duncan would just take the blows, so i felt it was a bit unfair for Lexie to blow her head off the one time Duncan did it to her.
From the very first moment Duncan fancied Lexie. I wonder sometimes why there was no more rivalry between him and his boss later in the series. But then Duncan always fancied other girls. You could count them anymore on 2 hands

Yea haha, but i think Duncan knew that Lexie didn't share the same feelings for him...and he knew how much she loved Archie, so he stepped aside. one of the great scenes of 4:3 is when he goes in to the estaate office to find her bawling, and they share a great moment, and he says, 'If you do go for the bare topless fight..don't start without me!' Duncan's a great guy
In the last conversation between Hector and Molly, Hector had every right to get mad at her for almost losing so much but instead he was very sensative and kind. It made a nice contrast between Lexie/Duncan and Archie/Katrina hurting each other by what they said. I think that they needed to show how Molly decided to give up gambling rather than just dropping it from the story line entirely. Her playing the horses was such a part of the first few episodes. She had to be pushed to the realization of how she really could lose everything if she kept up her gambling habit. I also thought the last scene was bittersweet. As Katrina and Fergal are kissing, Golly hands Archie the bet money and says, "You lose." (Another gamble going on in the episode.)

Yea bittersweet is the right word for the last scene "Like I said, son, you win, but it's a bet you don't want to win"
But if Molly hadn't gambled, then Archie wouldn't have gotten 50,000 POUNDS in the first episode (WHAT ON EARTH WAS MOLLY DOING? GAMBLING THAT MUCH ).
Well, it was such a change to see Hector keep a smile for longer than 1 minute And a nice change it was, that scene showed us how much they loved each other. One, (like Stella) would've thought that they were not compatible! (How absurd!)
Hiya! I have been offline for aaages, so I am glad to finally join in on this chat.
It is in this episode that we see why Richard Briers and Susan Hampshire are national treasures, their performances here are wonderful. The way they show us the love that is between Hector and Molly is so subtle and beautiful.
Now and again there are scenes in MOTG where we get glimpses of how strong and caring their realtionship is, and this is one of those episodes (for the reasons that others have already identified). It is really interesting to compare H&M's relationship with that of A&K and A&L.
A questions if I may? Why didn't Katrina (as a feisty, intelligent, modern woman in her 20's) not tell Archie in the cottage how she felt about him after the Kilfedder story? After all Lizzie had already told her is series 1 that he can't see what is under his nose and I never understand her silence on this scene (and still don't on repeated viewing) so anyone elses thoughts would be great.
About Katrina : in my eyes the only things she did was playing with Archies feelings and at the end of series 2 the silly lad was so stupid to fall complete in love with her. Didn't he see that under his nose someone else was walking around, someone who did everything for him instead of only using him for the community.
For the February Favourite, I would like to do the First episode [1:1] as it is it's anniversary next month - 27th - which we thought we might call Monarch Birthday or some such title??
If anyone wishes to do a screencap review, as was done for the last one, I would suggest putting it in the Series 1 Episode 1 discussion thread and leave this thread for the February discussion which I will start at the end of the first week of February!
You've done an incredible review of the episode here, Flu!!
What I loved most about this episode was that, although Molly was the center of attention, Hector was also allowed to shine. I never really had an opinion about his character--he was likable enough--until I had seen this episode for the first time. Most of Hector's great moments are subtle. Although the lines he says under his breath are fabulous, it's the eye movements, facial expressions and the grunts and moans--of which he has several different versions--that really make his character quite unique. He is odd, but not stupid, as sometimes his actions lead us to believe--and this episode showcases this nicely.
An excellent episode for Molly as well--with grace and a generous dose of moxie, she takes on the 'big boys' and had Murdo not turned to cheating, I wouldn't doubt that Molly could have beat the pants off of him--and that I would have loved to have seen!! ;D
It's great that Golly also showed what he's made of and stood up for himself, with self-respect and all of that and that Stitches was able to do the same by the end!
And hey, Flu--no more talk about me falling asleep ;D It was 12:15 am after all! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I've always enjoyed the screen caps accompanying the episode discussion, they seem to give it more life. Going back through previous threads and re-reading the comments, it seems as though the participants have always enjoyed the screen caps, too.
I don't have the series and can't always get it in time, so they are a great addition, IMO - including the first ones you did, Paul, for the September discussion.
It would be awkward to try to go back and forth between threads to read the comments and then to look at the pictures.
I am excited for February's discussion - it is one of my favorite episodes. ;D
Do you want me to start the discussion on the 4th or 11th?
As I had no response to my query, and as the normal was to give the first week for looking at the episode, I will start the discussion - with (I hope) a few screencaps (as aparently enjoyed by others) on
That sounds good, Paul! I'm looking forward to watching the very first episode again. (And really interested in what Maddie has to share about it!! ;D) If you need any screen caps made, just let me know.
I love your banner. I wish I could make screencaps to use in a banner or avatar
Thank you! It's my first attempt!
************ Paul--Do you need me to make screen caps for your Feb. Fav, 1:1, or have you been able to do them yourself? And if you would like me to post them, will I be putting them in the new February thread that you start? Kristine
