SOME FIRSTS OF THE FIRST EPISODE
I chose this episode as the very first showing of Monarch of the Glen appeared in the UK on 27th February 2000 and as I have already given a pretty detailed introductory discussion of this at the beginning of the Series 1 Episode 1 thread
I have picked out about 30 screencaps of First Appearances of the characters and instances that occurred in this episode, which really introduced us to most of the main characters.
So to start let us see the Title
We now get our first view of the of The Big House set in the Heart of the Scottish Highlands
Next we saw Hector, ‘Laird’ of Glenbogle shaving
Hector then hears the Monarch of the Glen - Big Eric - and we see him just as Hector saw him through his telescope
Hector now throws on his dressing gown as he rushes down the stairs where we see several characters for the first time in the Hall:
Lexie and Golly
and outside on the way to the Loch:
Molly and Duncan
Finally we see his two favourite dogs, Monty and Rommel looking on
The scene now moves to the Flying Fish Restaurant in London jointly owned by Hector’s son, Archie (who it turns out is the actual Laird) and his girlfriend, Justine
The scene then returns to Glenbogle following Hector’s “nasty accident, dear, your Father in the Loch” which brings Archie back to the Big House after many years, believing that his Father is on the point of death!
We next see the first shot of the local train bringing Archie home and his coming out of Glenbogle Station
Archie now arrives back in The Big House for the first time since he left many years ago and enters the Main Hall
He calls out and finally his ‘sick’ Father appears fit and well on the stairs, another first
Our next first scene is when he goes up to his old bedroom and reminisces
Our next first is to see Katrina in the School to be later, one of the loves in Archie’s life! We also see Maureen in the background
The next ‘character’ that we see is the almost extinct Osprey, being protected by Katrina and Golly.
Katrina sees Archie prowling in the woods and, not recognising him, jumps on him thinking he is a thief after the birds!! This is their first reunion after being at school
Archie and Golly recognise each other and Golly explains to Katrina who he is, after this their first reunion
Later on we see Archie and Katrina together walking along a road and she is reprimanding him for calling her “Gingernut” and for not taking his responsibilities as a Laird seriously; shortly afterwards he sees an old telephone box which brings back some of his childhood memories
Later, back at the Big House, we find another first timer, Robbie Fraser, the Estate Manager who is planning to sell Glenbogle and also make a profit for himself
That evening at Dinner, we have a first glimpse of Golly piping in the meal - “What have we here - the fatted calf?” as Hector quips with Archie’s return
Next day we see Archie trying to leave Glenbogle as he is fed up with the situation, this being the first of several attempts
To no avail and now, I believe, we have seen most if not all the firsts! Of course there was a lot more to follow including the firing of Fraser, Archie’s further attempts to escape and his saving of the telephone box, which is the first time he realises the importance of being the Laird when the removal men go off leaving the box because HE says so!
And the final statement when he tells Justine on the ‘phone that he can’t come back yet as “there is a problem here”
Finally, I will leave you with another majestic view of a Monarch of the Glen which started the whole story
Now xontinue your discussions...............
