WOW, Maddie, you have done such a fantastic job (as usual) that I don't know if there is anything more to be said - I realise that this is becoming more like the earlier episode reviews done by different people with the odd comment added afterwards...
As there have been so many reviews of the different episodes, I now tend to take one particular character in the episode - so in this one I have taken another of my favs JUSTINE who was really quite a persistent character in spite of the difficulties - so much competition... so here I go...
In this episode we start by seeing Justine and Archie going up a hill hand-in-hand and Molly reminds Hector "when we were like that"
they look backwards to the Big House and Justine to Archie says "it's a monstrosity".
Archie sees some plumbers arriving and runs back to the house much to the disgust of Justine. Shortly after she is attacked by a swarm of midges which still bother her when back in the house
After all that Justine decides to go and have a bath which she soon regrets when she sees the colour of the water...
Then she proceeds to explore some of the rooms inadvertently going into Jamie's room
Whilst looking around, Hector comes in and finds her looking at the various trophies
in his gruff away he asks her "What are you doing in here?" and then he tells her "This is Jamie's room - no one comes in here except Molly and I" to which she replies "Who was Jamie?" "He was Archie's brother... but he died"
Later Justine meets Archie and said "I didn't know about Jamie" but he didn't really want to talk about it
Later the family were sitting around in the living room when Kilwillie comes in in a terrible state explaining his problem concerning the arrival of a party who were coming the next day earlier than expected; it happened to be the day of the Glenbogle Ball and asks if... they could help out... before anyone can speak, Hector says loudly "NO Kilwillie" and everyone agrees... then, to everyone's surprise, Justine steps up and says "I'll do it"... everyone was amazed and others protested but Justine ignored them and said (quoting Katrina's favourite words) "for the good of the comunity"... Kilwillie was amazed and said "What an amazing woman..."
In the meantime, the plumbers had inadvertently gone into Jamie's room and found a box of small objects that had belonged to him; Hector comes in and is fuming because they came into the room (but that's another story) but is calmed down when they produce the box which he, Molly and Archie immediately took away down stairs
as they rush down the stairs into one of the rooms, Golly and Justine come in; Justine tries to follow Archie but Golly restrains her and takes out saying "Come me with me lass" and we see them going across the grounds
Whilst Hector was telling Justine about the Jamie drowning accident, Hector, Molly and Archie were going through the box of Jamie's objects and Hector found a film which he played on a projector; a number of scenes of the drowning were shown including
and some sweet ones of a younger Molly such as
andat the end Hector said to Archie "Good to have them" refering to Jamie's things.
At the end Golly said to Justine "This happened on the day of the Glenbogle Ball" and later "Poor Molly cried for a whole year after"
We next move on to the Ball and we see a very sophisticated Justine coming down the stairs followed by a very smart looking Archie
Unfortunately for poor Justine, I felt unkind Archie ignored her during the evening, giving all his attention to Katrina!! In the end she was so disgusted with him that she went to the library to join Hector who had retired there in disgust with Molly spending all her time with that 'bookie fella', Geordie; in connection with her relation to him, earlier Hector called her a Jezebel and she had responded with "I always wanted to be a Jezebel"
But to return to Justine, she asks Hector for a whisky "If you don't object to women drinking whisky?" He pours one for her which she throws back in one good swig
Then Kilwillie came in to the library and asked Justine if she would come and have a dance with him and they left the room.
Archie then came in and after a short while Hector asked him about Justine "Things all right between you two?" Archie replied "I don't know" and then "Things all right between you two?" referring to Molly and again Hector replied "I don't know".
After that pandimonium reigned when Hector attacked Geordie, Katrina's Alan brought in a flock of sheep and the plumbers above caused water to come crashing down through the ceiling!!
As Hector and Molly go upstairs passing Archie and Justine sitting on the lower steps Hector calls out to Archie "Good night Jamie" and Archie replies "Father, I am Archie... Jamie is dead..." and the pair go happily up the stairs leaving Archie and Justine alone. Then Justine says to Archie "I am leaving in the morning... are you coming?" Archie replies "I can't Justine... there are too many things to be done here first..." Then Justine says "I love you Archie... but I can't wait forever..."
and finally we see Archie going past his parents' bedroom with much laughter inside so he knows all is well inside and marks the door with a big tick
So we finish up with a sad parting of Justine and Archie... but a happy one for Hector and Molly
What a coincidence, this exact episode was shown on ITV 3 last night.
I felt quite emotional watching the scene of Hector looking at the old film, of Jamie/Archie on the Loch in the boat. You could almost feel his pain. Brilliant actor. And it was amazing that all they had to do, was stick a hair band and a 1960's dress on Susan, and she looked 30yrs younger. ;D
